Hopefully everyone is enjoying “The Poisonwood Bible.”  I’m just starting it, but I wanted to get our “blog” going.

Happy reading!

I Finished Lady Chatterley’s Lover

April 12, 2010

I wish the whole book was like the ending 1/3, I could finally relate to the characters.  I really came to like the gamekeeper – Oliver Mellors and I even started to warm up to Lady Chat herself.

There were a few quotes in the book that I thought were still fitting, the apply very much to our times:

On page 146, “The public responds now only to an appeal to it vices.”

Page 149, “But if things were bad for a long spell, the young ones might go funny.”  They were talking about the desire for socialism.

Page 297, “But then, I suppose a woman doesn’t take a supreme pleasure in the life of the mind.”  Wow!  Lord Chatterley you swine! How deeply you’ve offended thee.

I think I found the most enjoyment out of the last 6 pages of the book; Mellor’s letter to Connie.  It seemed to finally open dialogue with deep, caring feelings that I could understand and relate to.

Kelly – did you notice that he (Lawrence) referenced the love between Abelard and Heloise?  It was on page 312 of my copy.  Amazing how they keep popping up in our readings!
